Luke, John, Acts: How a Story Told Four Times Grew a Church is volume 17 of the twenty-volume series Rereading the Bible. The four Gospels disagree on genealogies, chronology, the last words on the cross and the morning of the resurrection. Tatian merged them into one; Marcion kept only one; the church kept all four side by side. The book follows Luke the rewriter and John who began anew, then takes on the most powerful traditional reading — four perspectives on one event, from the four living creatures to Vern Poythress — and sets it beside Nietzsche's perspectivism: both presuppose a viewer who can freely choose where to stand. Its claim: the "one event" was formed by four accounts kept side by side for two thousand years, and each perspective grew out of who the writer was bound to, what materials he had, and what he sought to hold together. Acts then shows a community that survived by not unifying — from Pentecost to the Jerusalem council. A final part brings the question to classrooms and organizations. An appendix of some 20,000 characters engages nine traditions of biblical interpretation.
