One Concrete Question, Grown into a New Foundation
In a 1990s computing lab at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a doctoral student in computational mathematics kept returning to one question: how does a mesh come into being from scattered points? The points are the same, the rules are the same — yet once woven, the mesh has something the points never had: structure. Where does it come from?
The question followed him for thirty years — through a CAS postdoc (co-authoring the foundational ACVT paper with Prof. Qiang Du of Columbia), Swansea University, and thirteen years supervising PhDs at NTU Singapore. The deeper the mathematics went, the further the answer moved beyond mathematics: structure is not discovered — it is generated. Not just meshes. Everything.
A craft grew into an ontology: every being shows forth (S), through difference sequences (D), within feature entanglement (E). With this engine, Dr. Wang Desheng has written fifty-plus monographs across some twenty disciplines — and founded Demai International in Singapore to forge the SDE agent cluster, convinced that the road to genuine general intelligence runs not through more finished knowledge, but through how knowledge comes to be.
This column begins with that mesh: one person, one question, thirty years, and a generativics still unfolding.
