创造力Creativity

Creativity is not a capacity but a predicament. Treat it as a capacity and you will measure it, train it, select for it — and each of the three thins it further.

3 on compound capability · 1 on philosophy of creativity · 5 essays · Growing

Treating creativity as a capacity is the shared premise of modern education and modern personnel systems, and their shared error. A capacity resides in an individual and can be measured, trained and selected for. Yet when a person has actually created something, the situation is almost always this: a problem had chased him into a corner, he happened to have a stretch of time no one was managing, and someone nearby happened to be willing to listen to him say things he could not yet say clearly. Not one of the three resides in him — they are a predicament. Booking the products of a predicament to an individual account has precise consequences: we reward luck, we train imitation, and we select the people best at appearing creative. Meanwhile the three things that actually need making — the deadlock, the time, the listener — appear on no one's appraisal form, and so no one is responsible for making them.

Compound Creative Capability · Education · Health · Business

Three views of one thing: creation never resided in a single person; it lives in the seam between a person and what is in their hands. In education, no report card has a column for that seam. In health, it is the one path a person cuts inside their own constraints, valid for them alone. In business, it is the five stages of six that the machine does not touch.

The Curse of Creativity, and How to Break It

Creation is a reweighting of meaning, so it always costs. The three curses are not fate but the bill for missing conditions — and every remedy here changes conditions, not willpower.

The Pursuit of Fruit and the Growth of Creativity

The popular verdict says goals and creativity are enemies. This essay argues the real conflict lies in three misidentifications of the fruit: a metastable state with three phases — goal before picking, work at picking, seed or trophy after. One falsifiable criterion closes the essay: re-entry rate should predict the decay of novelty.

A Capability That Lives in the Seam

One camp writes it into the curriculum; the other issues the tool. Both assume the carrier is the individual — one calls it a skill, the other equipment, and it is neither. Schools face a situation a century of design never met: the unit of assessment is the individual, the carrier is the compound, and a compound cannot be certified.

Cutting a Path Inside the Constraints

Twenty pieces of advice, each correct, each backed by trials, none of them walkable — they were written for a person who does not exist. A guideline is universal precisely because it strips out every particular constraint, and those constraints are this man's entire reality.

A Hundred Ideas Is Not One Innovation

A hundred ideas in an afternoon; two years on, the same number of launches. Ideas were never the bottleneck — ideas are raw material. Six stages run roughly 3:4:1:2:5:1; the machine collapsed the "1" to zero. Sixteen becomes fifteen: six per cent faster. Everyone believes it was a hundredfold.

The position all three share

The Core That Cannot Be Outsourced

All three stop at the same place: judging the root, aiming the strike, and owning the result. None is a cognitive act; each is an act of bearing. A machine reads ten thousand papers and is never bothered by any of them — it has nothing that can be chafed.

Originality is neither inspiration nor gift but a forced structural event: when optimisation (1 to 1′) and acceleration (1 to N) both hit deadlock and tension reaches its threshold, the logic of genesis breaks in — and only then does 0 to 1 appear.

What This Channel Will Not Do

This channel will not produce "ten habits of creative people", nor will it assess creativity. Not out of loftiness: those two are precisely what it means to take apart. Whatever can be measured is a trace of the predicament, not the capacity; whatever can be listed as a habit is a movement someone grew inside his own deadlock — transplanted onto you, only the posture survives. If anything can be done, it is to make the three things that appear on no appraisal form: a deadlock that genuinely will not untie, a stretch of unmanaged time, and one person willing to hear you talk nonsense. None of the three is cheap, and none of them belongs to an individual.
