This column and the Plagiarism column are two faces of one question. That side asks what plagiarism really is; this side asks how genuine creation is possible. Both run into the same wall: a system of evaluation that recognises value only once it has hardened into a product, and is blind to anything still in the making. Plagiarism is the loudest settlement at the foot of that wall. The thinning of creation is the quieter, more complete one.
A thought is at its most fragile not when it is refuted but when it has no shape yet — when even the person thinking it cannot say what it is. That is the moment the institution asks it to speak clearly. Not out of malice: what cannot be stated cannot be managed.
The Genesis of Writing: Why Textbooks Are Hard to Read
"Definition first" is not natural order but a worldview typeset. Understanding happens gap → emergence → definition; good writing follows the five-beat skeleton ΔE→S→D→E→newΔE — with four hands-on rewrites and a pocket checklist.

You are not exploring an object. Something not yet arrived is chasing you, forcing you to reshape yourself until it has room to appear. Darwin's twenty-two years, Wittgenstein's unrecorded conversations, Chen Jingrun's six square metres — none of them was protected by an institution. Each survived in a corner the institution had not got round to. Those corners are being paved over.

A thought is conceived in one mind but must be delivered by another's hands. "Too small to carry a grant" is not unkind — it is responsible advice. It simply lands at the exact moment the thing has not yet managed to say what it is. Darwin had Hooker and Lyell. The young scholar had a grant template.

Once a theory exists, what keeps it from dying? The usual answer: its own qualities — true, useful, beautiful — get recognised. That answer inverts the crucial fact. A theory's life was never in its own hands.
Sustenance: A Hidden Condition of a Theory's Survival
In 1854 Riemann finished speaking and almost no one had followed. It survived because over the next sixty years Beltrami, Ricci and Einstein each entered through its cracks with problems of their own and pushed it into something it had not been. Parsons was never refuted — he finished himself off: every gap he closed removed a joint a successor could have gripped.

Speed was never the problem; refinement inside a paradigm runs beautifully at speed. Uniformity is. Force every kind of work onto one clock keyed to short-term measurability, and the cognition that needs another kind of time simply vanishes. Entanglement spent thirty years as "philosophical nonsense" before the Nobel — it survived because back then a patch of ground still lay outside that clock.

Four essays, one root question: how is genuine academic creation possible? Each stands alone; together they form a line — being chased (grappling), being caught (midwifing), being pushed onward by successive hands (sustenance), and the one thing all three require: time that the clock has not cut to pieces (rhythm deprivation).
